About Pilates
What is Pilates?
The Pilates Method was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s and has since grown and evolved worldwide.
The method was created to strengthen and elongate muscles, addressing postural alignment with a focus on improving core strength and body awareness.
The method was originally popular amongst dancers and gymnasts. However it is practised today by a much wider public; this includes those working towards a stronger back and core muscles, flatter stomach or more specific injuries.
Pilates is recommended by osteopaths, physiotherapists, chiropractors and doctors as it is one of the safest forms of exercise.
How does it work?
The Pilates method is designed to restore your body to optimum balance, to elongate and to strengthen the body.
Exercises are taught based on an anatomical understanding of the body’s musculature and skeletal systems, enabling you to address areas of weakness and imbalances.
The Pilates method consists of a series of exercises which should be performed incorporating 6 key fundamental priniciples:
- Concentration
- Control
- Breath
- Flow and co-ordination
- Precision
- Centre / core stability
